Amos, Finding Jesus in the Minor Prophets

Image
Amos predicted that Israel would experience a time a spiritual famine (Amos 8:11-12) Men would search for the word of the Lord, but not find it. With the birth of Christ this famine came to an end. In the past God spoke through the prophets…now He speaks to us by his Son. So let’s read and interpret the Old Testament, together, in light of the full revelation of God in Jesus. Be Yourself & Pray

Image
This is what King David said in Ps 109:4 OJB “…I give myself unto tefillah (prayer)…”  W hat a mystery prayer is. Prayer is the primary and essential essence of spirituality. The spiritual pray - the materialists do not. Prayer is deep calling unto deep. Those with depth in their soul pray. The shallowest of souls pray not, they hope and wish. I think David may have prayed almost better than anyone else. This is not because he  was   better than anyone else — he wasn't — it's because he prayed about everything and seems to have always been unmistakably himself when he prayed. Be yourself and pray. Shalom… #pkes #MinMChurch #MetroLifeChurch

Hip Proverbs 3.0

It’s perfectly natural to envy those who are successful. But what about those who’ve gotten ahead by breaking bad and doing something a little shady? Does crime pay? Do the good do die young? And, why does the “other” guy seem to have all the fun? In reality the success of wrongdoers, the questionable, the devious is short-lived.   The wisdom of Proverbs and the Scriptures tells us God is against them, and their house is built on the sand ,   even if it seems to be a grand house. Listen:  D o not start down the road of the wicked—the first step is easy, but it leads to heartache, do not go along the way of evildoers…if you find yourself anywhere near…turn your back and run as far as you can in the opposite direction.  H ear my words, my son, and take them in; let them soak in…I have pointed you in the way of wisdom; I have steered you down the path to integrity…So get going. And as you go, know this: with integrity you will overcome all obstacles....Take care you don’t stray from th

Sounds of Silence

The Sabbath is a day set aside for rest and worship. According to Exodus 20:8 “… You and your family are to  remember the Sabbath Day;  set it apart,  and keep it holy…”  I t was a capital offense in the Old Testament to dishonor the Sabbath day. Today, in many Jewish communities, Sabbaths are still truly set apart. In Christian circles, not so much. Maybe this is due in part to Pauline theology (see Colossians 2:16-17 or Romans 14:5) Paul didn’t exactly gush over the Law, the Ten Commandments, in these texts as part of the Christian way of life. I find this kind’a odd because he wrote to the church at Philippi saying: “…I am a true Hebrew. As a Pharisee, I strictly obeyed the Law of Moses…” Regardless of Paul’s seemingly mixed message, it seems western Christians had an opportunity, based on Paul’s epistles, to march to their own drummer; overlooking parts of the Mosaic Law, and move away from Sabbath-keeping. Understandable, the Sabbath has nothing to do with salvation, bec

Fathers have a crucial role in instructing their sons. It’s easy and natural to teach children about some things, but what about deeper things, the kinds of things that make life worth living? These are much harder: “…My son, do not ignore the Eternal’s instruction or lose heart when He steps in to correct you; Because the Eternal proves His love by caring enough to discipline you, just as a father does his child…” *** "…Stay focused; do not lose sight of mercy and truth…meditate on them so they are written upon your heart…” *** “…Do not withhold what is good from those who deserve it; if it is within your power to give it, do it. Do not send your neighbor away, saying, ‘Get back with me tomorrow.  I can give it to you then,’ when what he needs is already in your hand…” “There is one thing, and only one thing, in which it is granted to you to be free in life -- that is to recognize and profess the truth.” ~ Leo Tolstoy, The Kingdom of God is Within You #Met

Finding Jesus in the Minor Prophets

Image
Nothing screams Jesus like reading the Minor Prophets: Hosea, Joel, Amos  and the other  nine prophets each speaking out over a 300 year history of Israel and Judah. What?  We began a study Wednesday night, January 10th looking at these guys and their pithy prophecies, each deep and rich in theological material,  culturally  relevant and revealing the redemptive work of Christ. Very cool! Directions to Ministry in Motion #MetroLifeChurch #MinMChurch

Epiphany Sunday

Image
The Epiphany     A healthy Christian walk includes prayers, creeds, and liturgies that bring us into the love of God & form us into people of love. so I pray: O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only Son to the Peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know you now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever -  Amen. #MetroLifeChurch #MinMChurch

Hip Proverbs

Image
Proverbs is practical wisdom passed down from parents (usually fathers) to young men who were preparing to enter a life of adult responsibilities: family, business, community leadership, and so on. Proverbs 1 “…Come on! Everyone...let’s wait to see whom we can beat to a pulp. We’re going to jump some unsuspecting chumps for no reason at all. We’ll have our way with them, and when we’re through, there will be nothing left…You have to join us; forget about God….” Each generation faces strong peer pressure to follow the ways of society, but wisdom’s voice is clear: “...My son, do not join them; keep well away from their violent, destructive paths ... they are really just hastening their own destruction by giving into their [own] desires...” The destructive and violent battle for our souls, our morals, our legacy is fought out on the pages of our social media accounts, in our conversations and in our attitudes, all of which are on display. May you be blessed in you
