I'm Bankrupt Without Love

Image
#MetroLifeChurch #minmchurch The fourth week of Advent , the last Sunday before Christmas, boasts of love. The gift of Christmas was given on a starry night, to the parents of a young couple traveling in obedience to the harsh rules of an oppressive government. The gift of God’s love, lying in a feeding trough, was and is for those of us who despite our failures and our brokenness and our mistakes, a gift of love shown more in deeds than in words. Here’s a couple of points I’m going to put into practice as I embrace the gift of God’s love and move towards Christmas day. Won’t you join me in: Letting those we love be perfectly themselves - not twisting them to fit my your image of who they should be - accepting them at face value; Looking for the image of God in others, reminding ourselves it’s about the contents of a person, not the container; Daily let’s remind ourselves, life isn’t about me, it’s about God and God is about love. Lastly as Advent comes to a clos

Advent - Joy

Image
The third  week of Advent   reminds us about the joy that is ours  because God has entered the world. Angels heralded the birth of the Messiah and kings came from the east to worship and marvel at what God had begun in Bethlehem. Joy to the world the Lord has come... While happiness is an emotion that can disappear as quickly as it rises to the surface, Godly joy is both a gift and a choice. We can choose to open the gift of God's Spirit, or leave it wrapped, under the tree and untouched - we have that choice. We can choose to live in an attitude of resentment; anger and fear or we can choose to pursue the joy of the Lord, exemplified by the baby lying in a manger. The joy that the Christ-child came to bring us is outside this world, its celestial and it's otherworldly; God's gift of joy is unconquerable. Granted, joy can have many shades, but it should never be determined by how we feel, but on who God is. #MetroLifeChurch #minmchurch Expl

Give Peace a Chance

Image
As a product of the love in, drop out philosophy of the 60’s, I became intimately familiar with the counter-culture chant of the day: “give peace a chance” This week marks the second week of Advent, the pregnant expectation of the coming of the Christ child, proclaimed by the angels when they heralded: "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace..."  The Hebrew word for peace is often translated shalom - completeness or well being. Jesus came not only to save us from our selves, but to give us, and to share with us, the peace or shalom, of God. While peace may seem elusive, the best I can offer is a short simple prayer: Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me! Amen

Ministering with the Gift of Toys

Image
Waking up Christmas morning, with no toys under the tree, might be acceptable for some adults, but for the kids - we can do better as a community.  While Jesus' birth is why we celebrate Christmas, our love for God and neighbor is  shown more in deeds than in words; So we share! Pastor Keith (pkes) and some of the 100's of stuffed toys, games and books  waiting for the Christmas Elves; The toys were headed to the Heights  Interfaith Ministry's annual, client choice, toy give-a-way!
