Butterfly Effect

Image
Proverbs 11:24 says,  “The world of the generous gets larger and larger; the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller" . Stingy = unwilling to give or spend, sparing or scant in using, giving, or sharing. Have you heard of the Biblical principle of you reap what you sow? It might look like this: If you are angry all the time, people are going to respond in anger. If you cheat other people, you are going to perceive that people are cheating you. If you gossip about others, guess what? You’re going to be neurotic that people are gossiping about you. In short, you cannot escape the consequences of your actions. Everything that you do has repercussions. Think " Butterfly Effect ".  This theory says in part: a very small event has exceedingly large and far-reaching impact. In practice it might look like this: If you forgive others, they are going to be more forgiving. If you’re generous, people tend to respond with generosity. Why not initiate a chain react

I Want It Now!

Image
I want it and I want it now! Waa Waa, like a child carrying on, we scream I want it now - an uncontrolled desire to acquire. Exodus 20:17 says,  “ You are not to covet  ..” In Hebrew,  covet or   chamad, means to desire or take pleasure in or  to lust after or to long for. Covet, this little word is huge in it's implications; so important is this word it’s included in the Ten Commandments. Now, desires are not wrong. In fact, many honorable wants come from God. But when our desires are uncontrolled, like a child screaming for something they want in the supermarket, it comes dangerously close to coveting. The smart writer of Ecclesiastes said: "...Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t ...."  God’s disdain for covetousness is uber valid – because it’s a form of idolatry, not something He likes. He's a jealous God. He tolerates no rivals. His jealousy manifests when someone’s center of focus is not on Him. How do you avoid the snare of coveting? Unde

Can You Hear Me Now?

Image
Are you a good listener? The writer of Proverbs said: “…To respond to a matter before you hear about it shows foolishness and brings shame.” Becoming a good listener is important to preserving and nurturing relationships. Good listening skills help you learn and understand as well as project a warm and caring attitude. Unfortunately many of us would rather talk than listen. Most people are very aware that other people don't listen well, but we're not nearly as aware that we don't listen. In The Book of Proverbs King Solomon called this foolishness or folly. When listening, we convey this foolhardiness when we do things like: trying to top the speakers story with one of our own; being distracted – and showing it; interrupting and here’s the BIG one: listening only long enough to try and find a fix for what’s being shared. Again, Solomon said answering before listening is both stupid and rude.  Want to be a good listener?  Use your ears more than your mouth; Pay close att

Goals

Image
Do our goals make room for God? “…We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps… ” Proverbs 16:9 In other words, don’t plan without God. We all have our ideas and our strategies, but how often do we not even consider the Lord while planning things in our lives? God and His will and opinion should be the greatest factors in all of our planning.   Yet, often we go to Him last or when our plans get all out of whack. Try this: Take your ideas and plans and goals to Him. Wait on Him – listen intently. And when you hear from Him, and even if we don’t understand God’s plan, respond to his direction. In fact, when we don’t understand God’s plan, that’s really the time to be even more deliberate and do exactly what He directs you to do. Until we get our goals and plans in line with His, God can’t do anything in our life. Another Sunday Thought…Pastor Keith   @minm_church   #MinistryinMotionChurch
