The Sandwich

minm.church
Imagine two perfectly baked slices of your favorite bread, maybe ciabatta.  Between the slices are three of your favored trimmings, how about: smoked, think sliced crisp bacon; finely shredded lettuce and ripe, but not too soft, avocado. Yum-o! In the Old Testament the prophet Jeremiah spoke God’s word over the Israelites who were in Babylonian captivity saying: “…For I know the plans I have for you…plans for peace, not evil, to give you a future and hope…” This is a comforting verse, highly over used and often out of context, but very welcoming, especially in the midst of calamity. Then Jeremiah says, two verses later: “…I will restore your fortunes..”  Again more optimism - that the current challenges are temporal and God’s in control with a known outcome. But sandwiched in between these two promises are three encouragements to the Israelites, and us. We’re told to: Call out to Him; Pray to Him and Look for Him, intently, like you are looking for something you lost. Check the sandwich ingredients out for yourself in Jeremiah 29:12-13. You can’t have a good sandwich without the stuff in the middle.
