Our Misguided Need to Be Coddled
Eating supper at Matthew’s house with his close followers, Jesus overheard some of the religious types trashing his companions, his company of characters, calling them crooks and riffraff. Being quick on his feet and masterful with his tongue he piped-up saying: "...Go figure out what this Scripture means: ‘I’m after mercy, not religion.’ I’m here to invite outsiders, not coddle insiders.”
The majority of pastors in America are saddled with one primary task, taking care of the people in the church - - not a bad thing. However, according to the apostle Paul's letter to the church at Ephesus, our pastoral job description includes: "...training and equipping [and] preparing God's people for works of service…"
As a pastor, I have a hollow fear in my heart, maybe we have coddled more than challenged. So I Pray that you are not a religious trash talker, nor a pious church insider that needs to be coddled and appeased. That rather you are growing in Christ by serving the marginalized and outcasts of your city and town. Let those in the community know us by our faith in the Eternal and our beautiful courageous works. Peace...#pkes
