Not As The World Gives

At the Last Supper, Jesus offered his disciples these words: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.”

The peace Jesus speaks of in John 14:27 is not simply the absence of conflict, the resolution of problems, or the comfort of favorable circumstances. It is a deeper, more enduring peace rooted in the presence and love of God. It is a peace that can remain even when life feels uncertain, relationships are strained, or the world around us is unsettled. Maybe you are experiencing this now. Take heart.

Jesus describes a peace that is received rather than achieved. Unlike the world’s peace, which often depends on security, control, agreement, or the absence of trouble, His peace flows from a relationship with God. It steadies the heart without requiring that every question be answered or every circumstance be resolved.

The context of Jesus’ words makes this promise especially meaningful. He spoke them to his disciples as He prepared to leave them, knowing that uncertainty, grief, and fear lay ahead. He did not promise them a trouble-free life. He promised them His presence.

Perhaps the heart of this passage is this: The peace of Christ does not necessarily change what is happening around us; it changes what is happening within us. It is not fragile. It is grounded in the faithfulness of God. It reminds us that even when life is beyond our control, we are never beyond the reach of God’s love.

Where in your life might you make room to receive Christ’s peace, even before your circumstances change?
